Common Mistakes When Booking a Handyman

Many problems start before the handyman arrives. These six mistakes are easy to avoid, and each has a simple fix.

1. Giving a vague brief

"Fix the bathroom" could mean a dripping tap or a full re-tile. Give a specific list, and send photos. A photo of a damaged wall or a cracked seal often lets a handyman quote accurately without a visit.

2. Comparing quotes for different jobs

One quote includes materials and waste removal and the other does not. The cheaper one is not cheaper. Ask each handyman to price the same written list, and check what is included.

3. Paying for everything upfront

Some handymen ask for a deposit for materials. Agree the amount in writing, and pay the balance when you are happy with the work.

4. Not clearing the work area

Furniture in the way adds time, and time adds cost. Clear the space, cover floors you want to protect, and tell the handyman about known problems such as damp, old wiring or a stopcock that will not turn.

5. Asking a handyman to do specialist work

Gas appliances should only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and larger electrical jobs by a qualified electrician. A good handyman will tell you where their work stops. If someone offers to do everything, ask what qualifications sit behind it.

6. Skipping the guarantee
