How Handyman Pricing Works in Manchester

"How much does a handyman cost?" has no single answer, because handymen do not all charge the same way. The method matters as much as the number, and it decides who carries the risk when a job takes longer than expected.

The three ways handymen charge

• Hourly rate. You pay for the time worked. It suits small, open-ended jobs, but the final bill is unknown until the end.
• Day rate. A set price for a full day, often used for a list of jobs or for larger work. Ask how many hours a day covers.
• Fixed price per job. The handyman looks at the work and quotes a total. It suits defined jobs, and the risk of overrunning sits with the handyman.

We quote a fixed price for every job. You know the total before we start, and it does not change because the work took an extra hour.

What a call-out charge is

A call-out charge is a fee for the handyman turning up, charged whether or not you go ahead. Some handymen include the first hour in it. Others add it on top. Always ask about it before you book. We charge no call-out fee, so you pay only for the work we complete.

What moves a quote up or down

• Access. A first-floor flat with no lift takes longer to work in than a ground-floor house with a driveway.
• Materials. Fixings, sealant, timber and plasterboard are extra unless the quote says otherwise.
• Waste. Old carpet, fittings and rubbish must go somewhere, and removal takes time.
• The condition behind the surface. A leaking seal can hide rotten board, and a patched wall can hide damp. Good quotes say what has been assumed.
• Grouping. Doing several jobs in one visit can cut travel and setup time. We offer a discount on multiple flat pack items for that reason.

How to compare two quotes

Write the job list yourself and give the same list to each handyman. Then check four lines on each quote: whether materials are included, whether waste removal is included, whether the price is fixed or an estimate, and whether there is a call-out charge. Ask about any line that is missing.
